Essentials by RESTORED
We love to talk to inspiring creatives! So it’s time for another round of ‘ESSENTIALS BY’, this time featuring RESTORED – our favourite boutique in Amsterdam. We asked the founders about their beautiful collection, new collaborations and future plans. We visited their store on the Haarlemmerdijk, and boy did we want to take all items home. Make sure to drop by when you’re around the city! Or find inspiration on their website and Instagram. Well, enough talking from our side, let’s sit back, relax and read.. especially for the coffee lovers among us (there’s an interesting little event coming up!).
1. Let’s get back to the beginning. When did you come up with the idea to open a store and how would you describe the typical Restored-aestetic?
The dream was to have a physical place to foster the merging of beauty, creativity, and people. The shop was the ideal platform for all of these things – a shop, in its very nature, has an open character. In 2008 we opened our store at the Haarlemmerdijk in Amsterdam.
As a team we continually search for authentic, clean, balanced and functional products. They are made by hand, manufactured with attention, made in small quantities or through thorough material research.
2. In store you have all sorts of products made by designers from all over the world. How do you find these designers and where do you get your inspiration from?
Our team keeps eyes and ears open and often designers and labels cross our path in an organic way. In certain seasons, we sometimes do targeted research, like warm knits for winter. We use the internet, social media and magazines. And also city trips give a lot of inspiration.
3. We noticed you recently teamed up with cool makers that resulted in the Restored Gathers collection. Can you tell us a bit more about this concept? And.. if new collaborations are coming up?
Yes, last holiday season Restored celebrated the launch of a brand new collection: RESTORED Gathers. We asked eight designers from the Netherlands and Germany to recast their bestselling products in our shop into a new form or material. This resulted in a collection worthy of the celebratory season.
Warm materials like copper, rose gold and brass are balanced with pastel colours and light tones. Soft materials such as wool and wool felt alternate with sturdy wood and leather. Each product in the collection is meant to hold out on its own; it was made with care working with honest, high quality materials with craftsmanship and attention to detail. Restored gathered these makers to create an original, warm and elegant collection to be thankful for.
Or next collaboration is with STRIETMAN. RESTORED teams up with espresso company STRIETMAN for the exclusive launch of ES3. We feature this hand operated espresso machine in store. And that’s a first. To celebrate, we invite you to a live demonstration and tasting in store. You can join us on Saturday May 23rd for the perfect espresso in good company. Attend here!

4. Where can we find the Restored team on a sunny day in Amsterdam?
We’re living on a very nice square and on sunny days you’ll find us and our kids out; Café Cook on the Jan Maijenplein, we think is the best (hidden) terrace in Amsterdam West. Or you can find us in Erasmus Park, they have a lot of cultural activities during the weekend. Hotel Buiten is a nice hidden spot as well. It’s located near Sloterplas, so the kids can swim and we can drink a nice wine.
As you can notice, with small kids, we love to stay in the west part of town, it offers a lot of nice cafes, shops, food markets and swimming places. When we leave the city we visit the beach or nice outdoor spots like Buitenplaats Plantage in Vogelenzang.
5. Where do you see Restored five years from now? Any cool ideas/collaborations coming up you can tell us about?
That’s a little hard to tell, since our way of working is quite organic. But we would love to grow more as a platform. So specifically – let’s be brave and just put it on paper – we work less in our physical shop and more on the creative side of our company in our office. And then our office turns into a communal table where creativity is encouraged and celebrated. We work with stylists and photographers to create new and inspirational images that highlight the strength of the products. We’re also working on small, private collections in collaboration with designers and craftsmen.
Three times dilemma:
1) Magazines or books?
2) Copper or silver?
Silver – still more timeless
3) Copenhagen or Berlin?
